NS digi.povera
Digital Migration of the Generation X
Case Study of the Novi Sad New Media Art Scene 1995-2020
The phenomenon of the Novi Sad new media art scene was generated in 1995, in a state of extreme social complexity — the Yugoslav Wars, the political isolation of the country and the economic crisis. Comparable to the conjuncture from which the radicalism of historical Arte Povera had grown, the emergence of NS digi.povera was defined by youth rebellion against militant nationalism and dictatorship, a revolt against established artistic institutions and genres, and faith in the newly won freedoms of the World Wide Web. The scene gained international visibility in the second half of the nineties through artistic residency programs, participation in international festivals and conferences, as well as through open communication channels on the Internet. The dynamic development of digital born art emerged at the junction of art and science, creative industries and the mass media. The core topics were: Control, Infowar, Cyber Ecosystem, and Construction of the Future.
The Matrix NS digi.povera includes a selection of artworks by artists and artistic groups of the Generation X: → Petrić-Dautović-Maruna, → Apsolutno, → Urtica, → Eastwood, → Vladan Joler, and → Stevan Kojić.
The case studies were developed in artists' native language (Serbian / Serbo-Croatian) to ensure authenticity and psychological insight focusing on identity.
