Under the motto CONNECTED DATA – CONNECTED PEOPLE, the Workshop on New Media Art Archiving (WNMAA) aspires to build a permanent collaboration platform that bonds together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders enabling them to acquire knowledge/skills through active participation:

  • Engagement in discussions to formulate networking participatory systems and knowledge production models that interconnect new media art archivists with the researchers, artists, and programmers;
  • Conceiving plans for actual modes of connection between archives that will enhance communication among practitioners involved in the new media art archiving process;
  • Exploration of solutions for the technological hurdles associated with using open knowledge-based systems to connect online new media art archives;
  • Highlighting the significance of comprehensive metadata and documentation standards for effective archiving;
  • Examination of strategies for enhancing access to archived media artist information while ensuring long-term preservation and security;
  • Collaboration to develop and test potential strategies for networking and tools development, culminating in the creation of the prototypes that integrate cutting-edge concepts and state-of-the-art technologies.

The Workshop on New Media Art Archiving was held at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, 5th-8th February, 2025. The Workshop brought together over 60 participants from Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin and North America. The main goal was to build a network of experts dedicated to advancing New Media Art archiving; as well as to establish a comprehensive knowledge-base and develop solutions that will lead to the creation of a framework for an internationally connected network of archives. The event was opened by Alistair Hudson, Scientific and Artistic Director of ZKM, followed by the short presentations of the organizers and lightning presentations of archives and archival projects.

The supplementary workshops on “Connecting People,” “AI as An Archival Tool” and “Graph-Database & Ontologies” were meant to support the main Workshop on Connecting Archives—the enrolled participants worked in the expert groups “Technical Architecture,” “Metadata and Vocabulary Group” and “Use Cases and User Experience Group.” The results of the Workshop have been presented at the Media Art History Conference 2025, “GLOBALLY CONNECTING NEW MEDIA ART ARCHIVES: Developing new tools for research and creative inspiration,” by B. Mitchell, P. Perissinotto & V. Vojvodic Balaz, 2025.

The 1st WNMAA was organised by ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in collaboration with the partners: FILE Archive, MEMODUCT posthuman.archive, ISEA Symposium Archives, ACM SIGGRAPH History Archive, Archive of Digital Art (ADA), and Ars Electronica Archive.
