Violeta Vojvodic Balaz

She specialises in new media art, with an emphasis on new media art archiving and digital heritage preservation. Her research interests include Computer-based art, Site-specific media art history, New media art archiving, Preservation of born-digital art, Art methodology, Genetic epistemology, Cybernetics, and Virtual economy. Special consideration is given to research on genetic epistemology and AI within the framework model “Autotelic Intelligent Machinery” (AIM). A native of Vojvodina (Republic of Serbia), Violeta VB graduated from the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad in painting and art pedagogy (1995), and received an MA from the Faculty of Fine Art in Belgrade for postgraduate work CD-ROM “Urtica Medicamentum est” (2000). She earned the European Diploma in Cultural Management (Marcel Hicter Foundation, Brussels), her research was focused on strategic planning and virtual organisation (2006). She studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Belgrade for her PhD (2017), with an art-doctoral thesis “The Case of Art-Adventurers Operating into the Global Margin: Art, Money, and Value in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” As a PhD candidate in Transdisciplinary Studies of Modern Arts And Media at the Faculty of Media and Communications, Singidunum University in Belgrade, she conducted a case study “Cybernetic Models of the Posthuman: Digital Art Nomads” (2018-2021). Violeta VB received a number of fellowships and awards, including the UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003 at the Institute for Advanced Media Arts and Sciences in Ogaki, Japan.

Violeta VB was trained in the traditional fine art disciplines (painting, sculpture and installation) but her interest in symbolic communication and tactical media drove her toward experiments that combine ICT and visual art. Her expertise includes: art research, data design, new media art archiving, media art production, environmental art, teaching, academic writing, project management, strategic planning, branding and copywriting. In 1999, she co-founded and led the  → Urtica art and media research group where she worked as a media artist and researcher until 2012. Urtica exhibited at international festivals such as Ars Electronica (Linz), Viper (Basel), FILE (Brasil), Ogaki Biennial (Ogaki); new media centers StudioXX (Ada X, Montreal) and The Israeli Center for Digital Art (Holon); and had a solo exhibition “Value Quest: Art of Fortune & Economy of Risk” at the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade (2010). Within the framework of Urtica's projects Social Engine &  → HoopUp, Violeta VB held workshops with students and artists at the universities in Saint-Etienne, Luneburg, Novi Sad, Belgrade, and art organisations in Innsbruck, Ulm, Montreal and Dundee. She was a co-founder and project manager (2001-02) of the New Media Center kuda.org (Novi Sad); she also worked as an editor/ New Media Expert (2005–2007) at labforculture.org, an online repository powered by European Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam). In 2020, she launched an online repository MEMODUCT posthuman.archive out of which the Memoduct Group was founded in 2023. She publishes regularly and participates in scientific conferences such as the Media Art History, the Summit on New Media Art Archiving (SNMAA), the CIHA World Congress (Comite International d'Histoire de I'Art), the International Congress of Aesthetics, etc. Since 2023, Violeta V.B. has been an IPC member of the Summit on New Media Art Archiving (SNMAA).

Eduard Balaz

Eduard Balaž is a new media artist and graphic designer who utilizes deep cross-media skills to uniquely blend artistic expression with information-focused design. His research interests include visual art, multimedia, experimental 2D digital graphics, symbolic communication, interactive models and comprehensive data visualisation. He has over 20 years of working experience in developing complex projects from scratch. His work encompasses web & mobile app interfaces, graphic design & advertising, branding & visual identity. Recent production is focused on integrated design solutions that merge iconography and UI/UX design, concept development and data visualisation aiming to facilitate visual discovery and actionable understanding. His expertise in the front-end development technologies has enabled him to architect information in clean and easy-to-use ways that balance artistry and functionality-driven decisions.

He received the annual award for painting at the Academy of Arts of the University of Novi Sad, and graduated from the same Academy in 1997. He received a Mag. of Art from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Belgrade in 2003. Together with Violeta Vojvodic Balaž, he co-founded Urtica (1999-2019). He worked as an art director at the advertising agency “Hammer Creative” in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. He was also one of the co-founders of New Media Center_kuda.org (Novi Sad, Serbia). He works as an associate at the marketing agency Blueliner  → blueliner.io  in NJ, USA — a b.labs Venture company (2016-)  → blabsventures.com . Since 2020, he has been working within the MEMODUCT posthuman.archive, where he is a co-founder.

Eduard has received numerous awards during the course of his artistic career, including the UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003 at IAMAS in Japan, an award at the “MAD 03” 2nd Meeting of Experimental Art in Madrid, the annual award of the Golden Eye Gallery “The Exhibition of the Year” in Novi Sad, Serbia and Montenegro, and the award of the IV Yugoslav Biennial of the Youth, Vršac, Yugoslavia.

His artworks have been showcased internationally at various festivals such as Ars Electronica in Linz, FILE in São Paulo, the “Viper” International Festival for Film, Video and New Media in Basel, and the International Festival of Tactical Media - Next 5 Minutes in Amsterdam; as well as at the exhibitions “Moirés” in Lüneburg, “Value Quest – Art of Fortune & Economy of Risk” at the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, “Value, Labor and Money” - Urtica’s 20th anniversary exhibition at the Contemporary Gallery Zrenjanin, and “Danubian Limes – Neoplanta MMXXIII” at the SULUV Gallery in Novi Sad.

Michael Aschauer

An artiste-auteur numerique and digital, creative full-stack engineer (Linz, Austria / Paris, France). He draws with bytes, pixels, code, and data, seamlessly navigating media and disciplines. His work captures the essence of both the human experience and the human condition in the Anthropocene, highlighting the interplay between life and machines, nature, technology, and society.

Michael Aschauer holds a MA (Mag.art.) degree in media design / digital arts from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. His artistic creations have been showcased globally in numerous exhibitions, festivals and screenings (such as at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, CCCP, Barcelona, Ars Electronica, Linz, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Millenium Monument, Beijing, Phoenix Halle, Dortmund) and solo exhibition in Europe and China. He won prizes such as Distinctions and Honorary Mention at the Ars Electronica (2002, 2006).

He has worked as a media and web developer and software engineer (self-employed or contracted freelancer) in an ever-changing landscape for 20+ years. His primary tools at the moment are frameworks such as Django/Python on the backend and Vue.js/Nuxt.js and various visualization libraries at the frontend. He has led the development of the educational platform “TurtleStitch”  → turtlestitch.org  and he has built and maintained a host of web appearances for cultural institutions from museums, type foundries, jazz and music clubs to art magazines. He also worked as a freelancer field-operating custom hard and software and visualizations for live broadcasts and as a software engineer for a hardware company.

He currently resides in Southern France.
